I ran across a listing for a book by a "Tobias S. Buckell" and my immediate reaction was "It's Bucknell, people, jeesh." But.. wait.. maybe I'm not right? I could've sworn. I would've put money on it, that it was Tobias Bucknell.

Why do I think it's Bucknell? Google isn't helping me find another Bucknell I may be confusing him with. And it actually turns up a few Tobias Bucknell hits, which just seem to be typos of Buckell.

What's going on here?

No idea why Bucknell -- it's definitely Buckell. I remember him talking about people mispronouncing it with the emphasis on the first syllable (so it sounds like buckle).

I was mispronouncing Nalo (Hopkinson) until Cory Doctorow told me how it was pronounced. Not like halo. :)

I have a friend who *still* mispronounces Gaiman, and I don't understand why...

Nope, it's Buckell, no n. He hates it when people get it wrong in that specific way. I think because most people with similar names are Bucknell.

(I have a similar problem; apparently because of the gigantic population of folk named Jameson, everybody wants to call me that. -_-)

I was going to say at least your name is somewhat unique as far as Google goes, so I tried it out. Google corrects me and says I probably meant Jemison.

I'm not sure why people have an instinct to add the 'n' to my name, I think it's the university (Bucknell University), and a small number of people have become convinced that the N is there and actually now correct other people: once it even happened in my hearing (I think that's where I got the reputation for being annoyed by it, b/c I promptly turned around and corrected the correction, but I was a bit unpleasant and I regret my tone now)! LOL. I once even had my name changed by a con volunteer because they said I'd "mistyped it."

But it is "Tobias Buckell" :-)

Best,

Tobias S.

Hey, now I know how to get authors to leave comments on my lj. ;)

I think maybe other people must've misspelled it so often that that's the spelling that stuck in my head. Well, now I can correct those other people!

"Hey, now I know how to get authors to leave comments on my lj. ;)"

TB: The secret's out; we're all raving egomaniacs who monitor where we're being mentioned :-) Name us and we come running like little attention-starved demons to a pentagram and some candles LOL

Agreeing with the man in question! It's probably because of the school. I'm sure you've heard the school name in passing for years and just have absorbed the sound and the way it looks.

I don't recall ever hearing of the school, so it would've definitely been subliminal.
