Congratulations to the Hugo nominees! In particular, N. K. Jemisin and Ann VanderMeer!

Full list here.

I have to say, I hope Star Trek wins, because the other movies are crap. (Caveat: I know nothing about Moon. But the _other_ movies are definitely crap!)

And I have to go for a Dr. Who ep winning as well, because.. well, crap! Though there have certainly been stronger Dr. Who eps in past years.

Looking forward to reading some of those Best Related Books.

One of my projects is to read all of the Hugo novels. But more recently I also plan to read all of the short stories that won the Hugo. The short stories are a little tricky, because there were a few years where it was only a 'short fiction' category, so I'm sure some longer stories made their way in there.

But I went to look for the first novel, "The Mule" by Isaac Asimov, only to find out it's a novella. And then I looked at what won in the novella category for 1946 and it's "Animal Farm", which I (and probably thousands of school children) always considered a novel.

Aren't categories fun?

So "The Mule" may or may not be in this Foundation omnibus the library has. The book's checked out, so I can't check. And honestly, the idea of reading a Foundation story at the moment leaves me cold. Maybe I'll skip to 1951. Oi, Heinlein.

I'd read them in the opposite order, but I tried a Chabon I thought I'd like better than Yiddish Policemen's Union and couldn't finish it.

Hrm, I could read all the women first.. that wouldn't take me long. *pauses to count* Yea, I could do that in a month. Except starting with the most recent means Jonathan Strange, which is a rather daunting-looking book to be honest.

T'heck with it, maybe I'll work on the Nebulas.

So on either end of that we have Dune, ugh, or Yiddish PMU again. But it is a shorter list overall. Maybe I'll start with Babel-17. I need to read some Delany.

WorldCon is expensive. I didn't even go when it was somewhat local. Well, I was in the vicinity. Met up with someone there. But didn't actually attend. It's even expensive just to be able to vote. Still, I'm sure you're all curious as to how I would vote if I could. Because my ego's just big enough for that. :)

Best Novel:

I've only read two of the nominees, but I have to say Little Brother edges out Graveyard Book for me.

Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form:

I've seen all but one of these. Not too thrilled with any of them, but narrow it down to Dark Knight and Wall-E and I go for Wall-E.

Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form:

I'd go for Doctor Who, but I recently rewatched both of the episodes nominated and they're not that great. Not like Blink, or a few other good ones. So I'm going to go for Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog for this one.

Those are the three I'd feel qualified enough to vote for. But if I went so far as to pay to vote, I might make an effort to decide on a few other categories. Hunt down some stories or whatnot.

I'll conclude with some numbers, which I'm sure someone else has compiled, but it pleases me to count.

Novel: 5 men, 0 women
Novella: 4 men, 1 woman
Novelette: 4 men, 1 woman
Short Story: 3 men, 2 women
Related Book: 4 men, 3 women (afaik)
Graphic Story: 15? men, 5? women (more uncertain on this)
Best Editor, Short: 3 men, 2 women
Best Editor, Long: 3 men, 2 women
Professional Artist: 5 men, 0 women (afaik)
Fan Writer: 4 men, 1 woman
Fan Artist: 4 men, 1 woman (afaik)
Best New Writer: 4 men, 1 woman (afaik)

Here's the list of 2008 Hugo Nominees. Some good names, of course. The "Best Related Book" category looks like it has some interesting reads in it. I haven't read anything on the entire list, I don't believe.

So, due to my illiteracy, the list that stood out the most to me was "Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form"; like all the other rabid fanbeings. "Blink" is an absolutely awesome Dr. Who episode and I wouldn't be surprised if it won. But it's up against another Dr. Who episode and a Torchwood episode. The really awesome thing though is that there's a Star Trek: New Voyages episode nominated. (Which is apparently now called Star Trek: Phase II. Oookay.)

I think I only watched one episode, though I may have watched two. I haven't been to that website in a long time. Catching up will be something to do on a rainy weekend.
