Since this post is about the episode of Desperate Housewives that just aired, I'm going to put it behind a cut tag for spoilers.

From what I saw of this episode (with my usual multitasking version of watching television), it was about this guy named Eli Scruggs, a handyman in town. This guy we've never heard of before and never seen before. He dies and all the desperate housewives talk about what they're going to do for the funeral. Cue flashbacks.

A flashback for each of the women. Turns out he was integral in Gaby becoming friends with everyone. Without Eli, Bree never would've gone back to her idea of writing a cookbook and launching her career. He helped out Lynette by rescuing her newborn daughter that she'd left behind in a hot car and making her see she couldn't have a job and children. He was a man for Susan to go to for comfort whenever she broke up with her latest guy.

In other words, he was the guy each of the women needed in just the right way.

If you need further proof that he's the biggest Gary Stu ever? He got to have sex with Edie. Because that was just what she needed.

Last week, we had an episode about how Edie and Susan need men in their lives in different ways. Well, clearly none of these women can get along without a man. But it's not just men in general, or a series of different men in particular. It's just one man. This handy man.

Heaven forbid any of these women should make a life-altering decision on their own, or stand on their own two feet, or go to bed alone once in awhile.

In short, this episode really, really bugged me, in a 'microcosm of the whole series' sort of way.
