I have a writer friend who tends to be ambiguous about the genders of her characters. She doesn't do it on purpose most of the time, but also doesn't mind that it happens. So after reading something new of hers, she'll sometimes ask me what genders I thought people were and we're often surprised at one another about what I assumed and what she assumed.
