I offer you Alex and the Ironic Gentleman. I haven't read it, but it's on my in-shelf. Alex is a 10-year old who's often mistaken for a boy, but she isn't one. (The Ironic Gentleman is a ship.) As far as I can determine, she's as spunky at the end of the story as at the start.
